Ever since the visit of President Donald Trump to India was announced, the goal posts have been shifting from minute to minute. Initially it appeared as if the primary purpose of the visit was to reach an agreement on a trade deal even if it was a preliminary agreement. Both sides felt that such an agreement would remove a major irritant in bilateral relations. Then India announced that a defence package worth USD 3.5 billion would be imported from the US. On the Indian side, there was no do or die demand.
